9 tips for motivating your lazy coworkers at work

9 tips for motivating your lazy coworkers at work9 tips for motivating your lazy coworkers at workThere is nothing worse than showing up to work every day and giving it your all, when it seems like the rest of your team is just there to take up space and rake in a paycheck. It can throw your whole day off and make it harder to get your job done, especially if managers or team leaders arent stepping up to help motivate their team. If a lazy coworker is dragging your team down, here are some tips and tricks to help you motivate them - even if they dont realize youre doing it.Ask, Dont OrderIf you dont have the title manager after your name, ordering other employees to get to work isnt going to get anything done - and will probably earn you a few enemies in the process. Youll have to be a bit sneaky here. Instead of ordering your coworkers around, try asking. Ask them for help with your project, or ask to help them with whatever theyre working on. It might not always work, but sometime s all a lazy coworker needs is a gentle push in the right direction to get them working again.Be ThoughtfulA thoughtful gesture never hurts anyone. Caffeine might not encourage your coworker to work faster, but a grabbing someone a snack or a coffee can earn you some goodwill and might make them mora likely to get to work if you ask nicely.Something for NothingEver heard of a little thing called quid pro quo? You dont expect to get something for nothing when you go to the store, would you? Why would you expect your coworkers to do something for you without getting something in return? Offer to do something for your lazy coworker in exchange for something you need done. The more unsavory the task you offer to do - like taking out the trash or cleaning the bathrooms - the better the response will be.CommunicateIf youve got a huge quota or a massive to-do list, communicating with your coworkers can be something that gets neglected. Forming professional relationships and networking ca n be a useful tool, but its something you have to take time to nurture. Send an email, text, private message or even handwritten note tosee how your coworkersor deskmates are doing and if they need any help. You might learn something new or find something they are stuck on that you can help with.Be PositivePositive reinforcement isnt just useful for teaching children or training pets. It can also be a vital tool for encouraging lazy coworkers to get their jobs done. Everyone loves to be appreciated for their work, and offering positive feedback when your coworkers do something right might be the one thing you need to encourage them to pick up the slack. No TattlingNo one likes a tattletale - we arent five anymore Tattling to your boss that your coworker isnt doing their job will cause resentment and can make you look bad, too.Instead, if you have to take this dicke bretter bohren mssen up the chain of command, make sure you phrase it properly. Dont just jump to the problem of the laz y coworker. Instead, explain that youre having trouble finishing team projects because one individual isnt pulling their weight. If they ask for a review, be honest but dont start out picking apart your coworkers work ethic out of the gate.Lay Off the Water CoolerGossip is a big part of the workplace, no matter how hard you try to keep it from spreading. People love to talk, and they love to talk about each other. If you want to encourage your coworkers to stop being lazy, one of the first things you should do is to lay off the water cooler gossip. Dont talk about them behind their back.Step UpSometimes, all you need to encourage a lazy coworker is a good leader. If you dont have a team leader or someone to take charge, it might be up to you to do just that. Even if you dont have the title you need to be an official leader, you can still step up.You need to thinkoutside the box a little and ask instead of giving orders. People will naturally start to follow a good leader, but you ne ed to work inside the hierarchy to get things done.Protect YourselfA lazy coworker isnt just annoying. If theyre slacking and your work is suffering as a result, it could put your job in jeopardy too. Dont let them affect your progress or distract you from getting your work done, and if it harms team projects, its important to keep the blame from fragestellunging on you. You dont need to take the fall for someone elses poor work ethic. No one likes to deal with lazy coworkers, but you will run across them in nearly every industry. Gentle motivation and positive reinforcement can be great tools to help you keep them moving, but if it isnt enough, you may have to break out the big guns. That means taking it up the chain of command. Its not the perfect solution, but it can help keep things moving. For more ideas to help you deal with lazy coworkers - or if youve got some ideas youd like to add - comment below orclick here to subscribe. This article was originally published on Punched Cl ocks.

This is why it is okay to skip the office happy hour

This is why it is okay to skip the office happy hourThis is why it is okay to skip the office happy hourIn any office, there are certain cultural dos and donts that help keep the figurative shipsailing smoothly. Unloading the dishwasher when it is full of clean dishes, engaging in small talk in the kitchen, volunteering to lead a presentation, signing up for corporate event or clubs - as corny as it may seem, all of these social obligations are necessary and can help you grow professionally and helpmaintaina pleasant environment at the office. But what happens when an office do riddles you with anxiety? Should you figure out a way to push through? Or just avoid it altogether? No, Im not talking about meetings - those are little hard to opt out of. But something like office happy hour or an outing with coworkers can sometimes complicate relationships or put pressure on people to socialize in an environment where they dont feel comfortable.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders mag azines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraOn one hand, the intrinsic value of socializing with coworkers at happy hour is obvious and holds just as much socialsignificanceas kitchen small talk. It also creates an opportunity for coworkers to festverzinsliches wertpapier in a casual setting and make connections. That being said, there is also a case to be made about those of us that just arent at our best in a happy hour setting in which case, it is OK to pass up the office happy hour to do something else withthe evening? And how do you politely navigate the dynamics of pushy coworkers who dont understand your reasons for opting out?Walking this line can be tricky, but it is definitely doable, and at times, is a move that is both necessary for your professional development and your self-care.when your heart just isnt in it.Its OK to bow out of the office happy hour simply because youre not feeling it. Sometimes, it can be difficult f or people who enjoy socializing to understand why someone might want to be alone after a long day at work. But if your heart isnt in the event, the spot everyone has chosen is out of your way, or you just want to get home as soon as possible to go grocery shopping - all of this is OK. When your heart isnt in it, people can tell, and it might hinder your ability to put your best, most social foot forward if youre burning the candle on both ends and are preoccupied with thoughts of what you would rather be doing.when you have other plans.Obviously, if family or an emergency prevents you from making it to an after work event with coworkers, no one is going to twist your arm or make you feel bad about not joining in. But if theres something on your agenda that isntthattime sensitive or important for your professional growth, turning down happy hour with coworkers can feel conflicting. The truth is, no matter how small the activity may be, if its important to you or is something youve be en looking forward to for weeks, you have to stick to that plan and honor yourself. There is always a time and place for letting loose and its entirely up to you how and when you choose to do that.when you want tomake a genuine connection. We all strive to stand out in some way, and when youre brand new at an office or just getting to know your coworkers, going to happy hourseemslike the obvious move for getting to know everyone. But sometimes getting to know coworkers in that setting can backfire - especially when some people go harder than others when it comes to drinking. Building relationships with coworkers on more neutral ground might be a good way to learn what makes them tick - and vice versa.when youre setting boundaries. It can feel particularly awkward to turn down an invite to happy hour or a long lunch when youre new to a job and an office. But, there is a power and a strategy to the dissent because it allows you to establish boundaries and discern which coworkers will respect your decisions and make an effort to get to know you in a way that is more comfortable to you. This isnt about keeping people at arms length and it isnt about saying no for the sake of saying no, its about getting to know the people you work with on your terms. That will help create more genuine connections with your coworkers, and in the end give people a chance to know the real you within the bounds youve created.when you want to take care of yourself.Going to the gym instead of happy houris perhaps one of the hardest excuses with which to escape ridicule-free. If the gym, the yoga studio, or the crossfit box is your happy place, people tend to look at you like you have three heads. Couple that reaction with the celebratory mood of a Friday happy hourand that kind of differentiation in values can leave you feeling like your priorities are out of whack. But self-care and wohlbefinden are not one-size-fits-all phenomena. What might look like self-care to some is not self-car e for all. So if going to the gym is your version of unwinding after a long day, dont substitute that guaranteed satisfaction for a social situation that might have an adverse effect on your energy. Its OK to speak up for yourself even if that means enduring a couple of eyes rolls. This article originally appeared on The Everygirl. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Pittsburgh Unemployment RatePittsburgh Unemployment RatePittsburgh Unemployment RateWith a jobless satz generally below both the state average and the average US unemployment tarif according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), workers in Pennsylvanias second largest city can breathe a sigh of relief. The jobless rate in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area in December 2014 was 4.5 percent. This is far below the jobless rate in nearby Cleveland. In December 2014 the Pittsburgh unemployment rate was the lowest it had been all year. In January 2014, the metro area saw its highest unemployment rate of 6.5 percent, but the rate slowly decreased over the course of the year. Aside from a spike in August 2014, the unemployment rate in Pittsburgh declined throughout 2014.Pittsburgh During the 2008 Recession and Its AftermathPittsburgh felt the effects of the 2008 recession, but this metro area was shielded from some of the recessions worst effects thanks to the citys long-established industrie s. Like other U.S. cities, Pittsburghs highest unemployment rate hit in early 2010. In Pittsburgh, the jobless rate spiked at 9.2 percent in February 2010, still significantly lower than the national high of 10 percent.Unemployment in Pittsburgh in 2011 and BeyondWhile the jobless rate slowly returned to normal throughout much of the U.S., in Pittsburgh it declined quite rapidly over the course of 2010. The citys longstanding industries such as education, manufacturing, and technology, have contributed to a speedier than average recovery from the recession and have fostered competitive unemployment rates ever since. While the area saw occasional spikes in its unemployment rates especially in January 2011 and 2013, overall Pittsburgh maintained a low unemployment rate between 2011 and 2013.Pittsburghs Major Industries and Their Impact on UnemploymentIn 2014, the largest industries in Pittsburgh were education and health services, trade and transportation, professional and geschftliche r umgang services, government, and leisure and hospitality. Reducing Cost of Replacement Parts with 3-D Printing

Reducing Cost of Replacement Parts with 3-D Printing Reducing Cost of Replacement Parts with 3-D Printing Reducing Cost of Replacement Parts with 3-D PrintingCase Study provided by MarkforgedStanley Black Decker, an SP 500 company, is a diversified global provider of hand tools, power tools and related accessories, electronic security solutions, healthcare solutions, engineered fastening systems, and more. By integrating Markforged additive manufacturing technology into their workflow, they eliminated the need for complex warehousing and slashed costs by 12x and lead times by 20x on low-volume replacement parts. Before utilizing the Metal X, Stanley Infrastructure Innovation engineers faced a lose-lose situation with low-volume replacement parts either machine parts on demand or keep them in stock.Unrealistic IdealBecause the machining infrastructure to create one part is equal to that of batch manufacturing, fabricating one-off parts is prohibitively expensive and requires unaccepta ble lead times. While it avoids the need to keep inventory, its cost makes it an unworkable solution.Inefficient RealityBy storing replacement parts in inventory, Stanley Infrastructure always has a part available and leverages lower batch manufacturing costs. However, to support this infrastructure for thousands of parts the company has to keep a massive physical inventory thats costly to maintain.Wheel ShaftThe PG10 Profile Grinder used to be machined out of a single block of steel. Because of the size of the flange and the length of the shaft, this wasted 90% of the stock material in each part. Stanley engineers redesigned the wheel shaft to be a three-part assembly. By purchasing an off-the-shelf shaft and key, they were able to easily print the flange on the Metal X. The printed wheel shaft cam costs $16.38 to print and holds the 90lb frog grinder.Actuator HousingThe original actuator housing for the PD45 Hydraulic Post Driver consisted of four partsa cast and machined main hou sing, laser-cut cover plate, and two bolts to fasten the housing assembly together. Stanley Infrastructure Innovation engineers redesigned the part to print on the Metal X. Instead of a four-part assembly, the redesigned part prints in one piece without supports. The actuator housing costs less than $20 to print and took less than two days from design to final part.Stanley Infrastructure Innovation tested three identical parts printed on the Metal X. These parts proved durable through tens of thousands of cycles and strong enough to handle significant compressive load. Replacing their current manufacturing workflow with the Metal X allowed Stanley Black Decker to save between 34% and 48% on manufacturing costs and slashed 69% of part lead time. While these are significant savings, Stanley Black Decker leveraged the use of its Metal X even further by supplanting their process of single replacement parts for devices in the field.Printing single parts with the Metal X proved 12.5x ch eaper and 20x faster than the companys existing process of casting and machining in batches. The Metal X further undercut this process by being a pay-per-part machine instead of a pay-per-batch machine. According to a Stanley Infrastructure Innovation engineer, It is very feasible to leverage the Metal X platform in additively manufacturing the discussed actuator housing with very minimal capital and time investment. They believe that they can save thousands of dollars per year on this part alone, while replicating the part quality and reliability that they expect from machined parts.Learn more about metal and composite additive manufacturing solutions at markforged.com.Recommended for You Mechanical Engineering magazines Manufacturing Special Report

17 Things the Happiest People Say Every Day

17 Things the Happiest People Say Every Day 17 Things the Happiest People Say Every Day There’s an easy-to-articulate, hard-to-implement best practice when it comes to how to teach yourself to be happy. It stems from the recognition that the positive things you do for other people often reverberate back to create positivity in your own life. In effect, doing little things to make other people happy can greatly improve your happiness. Make sense? There are two theories at work. The first is that focusing on others creates joy of its own accord. The second is that as you succeed in improving others’ happiness, you’ll wind up with happier, more grateful people around you. They’ll find you likable and charismatic, which in turn can lead them to treat you in a manner that produces even more happiness. It’s easier said than done, but fortunately, there’s a compelling shortcut. Your words are among your greatest tools, so you can have an outsize effect on others simply by thinking about what you say every day and making an effort to be both positive and sincere. There are certain inspiring things that truly happy people find themselves saying to others all the time. Try making an effort to say a few of these every day for a week. You’ll be amazed at how the positivity you create improves your happiness. 1. “I’m Happy to See You” This is the most basic and attractive sentiment you can express to another human being- that simply being in the person’s presence creates a positive feeling. Whether you’re telling an employee that you need his skills, that you value his opinions, or just that you think he’s good company, you’ve begun an interaction on a very high note. How can that not produce some level of happiness in the other person? 2. “I’m Always Happy to See You” Take the previous remark a step further. This is the opposite of most relationship advice- that you should never take a specific negative action and suggest that it’s indicative of someone’s entire way of acting. Well, turn that on its head, by expressing that it’s not just this interaction that has produced positive feelings but basically all interactions with this person. It’s an amazingly gratifying thing to hear. 3. “Remember When You...” Surprise someone by bringing up a positive thing that she did in the past, and you’re almost guaranteed to induce a positive response. Maybe it’s a joke the person told that you’re still laughing about; maybe it’s a small act of heroism she performed. Regardless, if it’s something she thought was long forgotten, learning that something she did made a positive, lasting impression on someone else is an amazing experience. 4. “You Might Not Realize This, But...” This an even more potent version of the previous suggestion, provided you finish the sentence with a description of how the person’s actions led to a positive outcome. It’s one thing to learn that other people recognize the favorable things you’ve done; it’s another thing entirely to learn that you’re having a positive effect on other people without even realizing it. 5. “You Really Impress Me” This is similar to “I’m happy to see you” and “I’m always happy to see you,” except that it focuses on things that the person does, rather than his or her existential being. Other variations include “You are really great at...” or “People love that you...” Simply be sincere and specific. “You’re really great at calming stressful situations” or “People love that you always have the best music.” It can be anything, as long as it’s authentic and truly positive, and it’s guaranteed to elicit positive reactions. 6. “You Really Impressed Me When...” Focusing on specific actions or events can be even more powerful. It means that you’re not only thinking abstractly but offering proof that things the other person does provoke positive reactions. It’s the difference between saying that a comedian was really funny and quoting one of his or her best jokes. (Other versions: “You handled that well when you turned that client’s objection into an opportunity” or “It was really cool to see how you parallel-parked that car into that tiny spot.”) 7. “I Believe in You” People have self-doubts. You do, I do, we all do. (Heck, every time I write a column here- and this is number 167, by the way- I wonder how people will react.) When others simply say they believe in you, however, it becomes easier to believe in yourself. Here’s an analogy. Have you ever gotten into lifting weights, or simply watched people do it? It’s amazing how the slightest bit of assistance from a spotter- with force equal to the weight of a pencil- can help someone lift far more weight than he could on his own. It’s the same concept here- just that small expression of confidence can push people to achieve more- and then to be thankful for the help. 8. “Look How Far You’ve Come!” It is so important to celebrate achievements. This doesn’t mean you have to throw a party, but even acknowledging that someone’s efforts have achieved results can be extremely gratifying for the person. Of course, heck, if you want to take things to the extreme, throw a party. Just be sure that you’re the one buying the first round and singing the loudest. 9. “I Know You’re Capable of More” Everyone needs to be pushed at times, especially when we fall short. If you care about people, you’re going to be called on sometimes to be a bit of a coach, or maybe to employ a bit of tough love. Even the most steadfast and confident among us sometimes need a friend to guide them to a better way of acting. The late, great NFL coach Vince Lombardi put this best: “Leadership is getting someone to do what they don’t want to do, to achieve what they want to achieve.” Nobody does anything great alone, so be the one standing by to help, and you’ll inspire positivity and gratitude. 10. “I’d Like to Hear Your Thoughts About...” Everyone likes to think that his or her opinions matter, and of course they do- sometimes. However, this kind of invitation to share what someone thinks can’t help making the person feel just a tiny bit more self-worth, which in turns creates both happiness and positive feelings toward you. Just be sure to be sincere; don’t just say this for the sake of saying it. Make sure that you are truly interested in whatever subject you’re asking about and listen actively. 11. “Tell Me More” This is the best follow-up to the last item. It tells the other person that you’re listening, and that you find value in what he or she is saying. The actor and writer Peter Ustinov once said that the greatest compliment he ever received took place when he was afraid he had gone on too long in a conversation with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, only to have her tell him, “Please continue.” 12. “I Took Your Suggestion” OK, it’s almost too easy at this point. Combine asking someone’s opinion and demonstrating that the person has had impact on your life and you’ve provided him with two of the most gratifying, basic experiences of the human condition. It doesn’t matter really whether you tried a new restaurant on the other person’s advice, followed his suggestion on how to begin an important conversation, or started getting up 15 minutes earlier for a week because he said it was a good idea. Simply being listened to and having impact makes people feel better. Bonus points if his suggestion created a positive result, but you’ll get credit regardless. (Related: “You were right.”) 13. “I’m Sorry” Say this when you mean it- when you’ve done something worth expressing regret for or the other person deserves sympathy. However, don’t water it down by using it when you don’t mean it. In fact, one writer made a compelling argument recently that the phrase is so overused that it ought to be retired. That would be a shame, but it underscores how people appreciate this phrase when it’s sincere, and how it annoys them when it isn’t. 14. “I’d Like to Be More Like You” Now you’ve got it- you’re expressing positivity toward other people almost naturally, pointing out not only things that they do well but maybe even things they do better than you do. If you want to see a sentiment similar to this work very effectively, watch the 1997 movie As Good As It Gets. Or else, just read this short bit of dialogue in which Jack Nicholson’s character offers Helen Hunt’s character the ultimate compliment: “You make me want to be a better man.“ 15. “Thank You” It’s not that much of a stretch to suggest that every other item on this list is in fact a form of “thank you.” This is truly one of the most powerful, underrated phrases in the English language. It packs a heck of a punch, encompassing positivity and impact in two little syllables. (By the way, thanks for reading this far into this column. Maybe if you share it with others, they’ll thank you, too.) 16. “You’re Welcome” Not “yep.” Not “no problem” or “no worries.” Say “You’re welcome.” Instead of deflecting another person’s thanks, as some of these other phrases do, saying “you’re welcome” dignifies the person’s gratitude. It acknowledges that yes, you did do something worthy, or nice, or positive for someone- because you believe that she’s worth it. 17. “No” There’s one small risk in this entire mode of expression, and this word is your fail-safe. The danger is that sometimes people who make other people’s happiness their priority can wind up doing so at the cost of their own happiness. We all know some people who take advantage, or who simply aren’t going to be happy no matter what your efforts amount to. Two little letters, and yet they can be so powerful. Most important, they demonstrate that you care for yourself, which is a key prerequisite to caring truly for other people. Carry this one in your back pocket; use it when necessary. You’ll find that the most positive and happy people you interact with respect you for doing so- and that can make you happy, too. Photo of happy woman courtesy of Shutterstock.

Employers expect administrative professionals to stay abreast of trends in the industry and to adapt to changes, and this can be verified by the continuing education necessary to maintain the IAAP CAP certification. Continuing education ensures your skills remain current and fresh, and that you’re equipped with the knowledge to meet new challenges. IAAP recertification is required every five years for an individual to keep their professional certification status. CAP holders can earn recertification credit by holding office, chairing a committee and by earning other professional or technical certifications, such as Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS). The 7 commandments of leggings at work

The 7 commandments of leggings at work The 7 commandments of leggings at work There’s been a flurry of conversation around leggings shaming, after United Airlines refused to allow two young girls clad in the ubiquitous not pants/not tights substitute to board a recent flight. I cannot tell a lie. In my work as a personal brand strategist, or when I lecture on personal branding on the graduate and undergraduate levels, I have never once told a client or student to wear leggings to the office. And I never will. But as the workplace evolves, the dress code becomes elastic (see what I did there?).  But back to leggings.Leggings are a work option. They are. But they require care, and planning. Recklessness in leggings is quickly punished by the loss of your personal credibility at work, as we’ll see. So before you opt for the stretchy comfort of leggings, consider these facts. Wearing overly casual clothing was identified by senior managers as the most common dress code violation (47%), followed by showing too much skin (32%), in a recent survey   by staffing f irm  OfficeTeam. In fact, Brandi Britton, district president of Office Team told Ladders, “Many workers probably don’t think dressing down is a big deal, but  if your office attire is inappropriate, you may not always receive the level of respect your achievements merit. “In fact, according to our survey, 80% of executives said clothing choices affect an employee’s chances of earning a promotion,” Britton said.  That said, Britton admits that “many employers are allowing workers to dress less formally in the office, especially in creative and tech fields, among others. To determine if  leggings  are acceptable, employees should consult company policies and also pay particular attention to “unofficial dress codes,” including what their supervisors and other managers within the company are wearing.” If you’re a banker or financial worker though, you’re probably out of luck. Britton says those career dress codes typically skewed more formal and conservative and †œin these more traditional settings,  leggings  would probably be frowned upon.” One more tip from Britton, “It’s also often recommended that employees in customer or client-facing roles maintain a certain level of professionalism in their attire.”  So if you work in a more casual office environment, you can certainly exercise more fashion freedom, and yes, even wear leggings to the office. Here are some guidelines - commandments, if you will, of sporting leggings.  Thou shalt not wear gym clothes to the officeThis should go without saying: the legging you wear to work should be clean, polished and never, ever the same pair of leggings you wear to the gym. Let’s never discuss this further.  Thou shalt not reveal your rear endPilar Quintana,  VP of Merchandising at Yandy.com says, “the biggest point to stress is that you must wear a long shirt to cover up your fanny. If you don’t wear a long shirt to cover up and you wear more of a short blouse or blazer, your leggings must be very thick, like ponte fabric.”Thou shalt dress leggings up, not downIf an outfit includes leggings, they should be the most casual element; everything else should elevate the look. Quintana stresses that when choosing shoes to wear with your leggings, “you should not wear flip flips or it tends to look like activewear.  Booties, heels and boots look great with leggings for the workplace.”  Thou shalt consider a long tunicA long, print or color block tunic that falls anyplace from lower mid-thigh to above the knee with leggings and boots or ballet flats adds an arty effect.Thou shalt treat leggings like breechesMilitary-influenced looks do well with leggings, which the Duke of Wellington knew well. A jacket with boxy shoulders, shoulder or trench coat detailing, belts, pockets or even gold detailing adds a sharp, clean look to what can otherwise be perceived as completely casual. High boots, especially with a flat heel, ground the look.   Thou shalt use leggings as a canvas for statement topsTops that are otherwise difficult are usually perfect for leggings. Asymmetrical effects are a good choice. An uneven hem on your top â€" think handkerchief bottom, lace trim or angled cut - work well with leggings and add a polished look to an otherwise potentially distracting detail. Thou shalt skirt the issueWhile leggings look most flattering in shades of black, navy or other neutrals, if you love the idea of adding some color to your wardrobe, you can wear a stretch skirt with bright colored leggings underneath. Bright pink or even buttercup yellow look less shocking worn this way.

Survey A shocking number of women feel they lack work-life balance

Survey A shocking number of women feel they lack work-life balance Survey A shocking number of women feel they lack work-life balance Workers everywhere are on a grind. Whether it’s a 12-hour work day at some startups or a six-day work week at other companies, many employees in competitive professions are expected to be ready and willing to work long hours. Add a side hustle into the equation, and work-life balance goes out the window. This rigorous schedule becomes even more daunting for women, who because of traditional gender roles take on much of the responsibility of the child and elderly care in their families. A recent Bustle Trends Group survey of 283 women found that almost half of respondents felt they “currently lacked work-life balance.”  39.6%   said they had left a former position because of that imbalance.Pile on a second, third or even fourth job and the stress keeps coming.  26.5% of respondents said they worked more than one job. 6% worked three or more. Those numbers far outpace the nationally accepted standard that only 5% of working Americans have multiple jobs.So what are women to do if t hey want some semblance of work-life balance? Well luckily, their peers have recommendations.Set expectations“There can be a lot of pressure to stay late or always be available, but in my current jobs I’ve set boundaries early, and reinforce them often,” one respondent to the Bustle survey said. This advice directly addresses the problem that (likely) another woman pointed out.“I was in a new job that had a company culture of who could stay the latest,” she told Bustle. “It led to burnout.”Choose your side hustle carefully13% of Bustle’s respondents felt pressured or unbalanced because of their side hustles. But instead of driving for Uber or tutoring, one woman told Bustle about how her side gig was actually meaningful - and led to something more. “I had it for years while working full time as a way of being able to get out of my 9-5 eventually. Got laid off this fall and am finding ways to make the side hustle into my full-time,” she said.Make time for yoursel f“I base extra work off my schedule,” one woman told Bustle. “So if there’s something that needs to get done, I will do it after dinner or a workout if I have it scheduled.”Another woman said,  Ã¢€œI literally don’t check my email over the weekend.”While that last approach may be a little extreme, you have to do what’s right for your health and career. Only you know what that is. But if you’re stressed about work-life balance, you obviously aren’t the only one. And if you’re looking for advice from people who have been through this before, there are clearly plenty of women who are willing to share their wisdom.

One simple trick to help maximize you weekend

One simple trick to help maximize you weekend One simple trick to help maximize you weekend An experiment conducted by Harvard Business Review unmasks the biggest impediment to a satisfying weekend: perspective. Two experiments (the second performed to ensure the results of the first) instructed one group of employees to leave work on Friday with the mindset that they were entering a “small vacation,” while the other group were told to view the weekend as they normally would. The first group was found to feel satisfied and generally more relaxed the following Monday. The research was inspired by vacation statistics. We’ve come to romanticize the concept of “excessive work” and as a result, developed an antipathy toward downtime. America, being the only industrialized nation that does not make vacation time mandatory sees more than 50% of American workers not using their paid vacation time each year.A reboot of the concept of vacationing  needed to be enactedThe first experiment took place back in 2017. Out of a pool of 400 working Americans, 200 treated Saturday an d Sunday like a vacationâ€"the other 200 made no shift in mindset whatsoever. The first group did less work around the house, spent significantly less time ruminating about their job, and made a concerted effort to both live more in the present and to devote time doing more of the things that bring them joy. To ensure the experiment yielded tangible results, both groups were given a budget that could not be exceeded. A steady emotional state was not dependent on any external factors, the results were strictly based on perspective. The study was recreated last year with a whole new crop of workers â€"  this time 500 of them. On this go-round, the happiness of the subjects was measured during the weekend itself not just the Monday proceeding it. The data was identical to the experiment of last year, except this time researchers could confirm what could have been reasonably suspected initially: the vacationers were superiorly happy over the span of the weekend as well. Those that treated their weekend like a vacation didn’t engage in activities dramatically different than those that observed a regular weekend. It was all in the attitude. Two women pulled from each group demonstrate this plainly. The first, who was just enjoying a standard weekend, made her favorite breakfast while the other woke everyone in her family up and made them pancakes, stating:“It’s something I like to do when we are on vacation. I found myself enjoying the morning more than usual, maybe it’s because I focused on staying in the moment.”Another important aspect of the study involves avoiding making this shift in viewpoint a routine.   Habitually disconnecting from the day-to-day grind of work and all of its stress can lead to a reduction in its “emotional” and “cognitive” effects.

Why the Me Generation Label Doesnt Fit Millennials

Why the Me Generation Label Doesnt Fit Millennials Why the Me Generation Label Doesnt Fit Millennials Why the Me Generation Label Doesnt Fit Millennials Carson, author of The Finch Effect: the Five Strategies to Adapt and Thrive in your Working Life(Jossey-Bass, 2012) If you havent found yourself recruiting Gen Y candidates,or managing a member of the Millennial Generation, chances are very good that you will and soon. An estimated 80 million Gen Y workers are new to the workforce or preparing to enter it. And they are ready to get down to business and produce for those who know how to harness their unique professional potential. Yet with all the epithets floating around about this generation of workers including entitled, narcissistic, spoiled, and even lazy understanding what to do with these young, digitally-savvy, and confident professionals continues to stump many recruiters and managers. Some simple statistics paint a very different picture of who the average Millennial worker actually is: in a recent Pew Research Center survey, 73% of Millennials surveyed listed being a good parent or helping those in need as their top priorities in life only 15% listed having a high-paying career as the top priority. Such priorities are at odds with their profile as Generation Me and Generation Next for their self-focused view of the world. Gen Ys Social Media Connection In spite of the cultural hype, as a generation Millennials have a lot to offer employers, especially when it comes to the ability to connect and communicate through the latest technological trends. Statistically, Millennials are the most socially connected generation, with over 75% having a social network profile conversely, only 50% of Gen Xers have social network profiles. And they define themselves as connected: a majority of those surveyed by Pew cited technology use as the most defining characteristic of their generation. This isnt surprising.Gen Ys have grown up with the technology that allows us to communicate and access information at the speed of now; in fact, they helped shape this technology first as primary consumers of products like Nintendo and now as industry leaders in companies like Facebook. Compared to previous generations, this social media generation overwhelmingly sees technology as a means to make people closer, work more efficiently, and make life in general easier. Social Media in the Workplace But their strength is also their weakness employers have found that social media savvy doesnt always translate to interpersonal savvy, and that coming of age with Instant Messenger, Smartphones, and Twitter has wreaked some havoc on attention spans and the ability to manage time. On average, Millennials report sending 20 texts every 24 hours; about one third reported visiting social networking sites several times a day habits that are not necessarily conducive to focus, productivity, or face-to-face interaction. Beyond a well-thought out social media policy, how can managers harness and work more effectively with this Millennial generation, when their strength is one of their weaknesses? The answer is to provide fast and regular feedback that encourages their technological savvy while developing offline business acumen.
