I’m finding I’m a little scatter brained at the moment in planning what I need to do and could use the help. I use Todo on my iPhone, which is a great app, and it syncs flawlessly with Toodledo, so some way to take JibberJobber with me would be great. I dont really have a planning system that I use, outside of my Outlook Calendar (soon to be integrated with JibberJobber oh and Im not even going to preannounce JibberJobber on the iPhone or Blackberry (oops, did I just preannounce that??). 8 Tips to Giving an Interview Presentation In my time as a senior recruiter I have sat through no small number of presentations. Many of them left me cold. I wondered if the people giving them really understood the purpose of the exercise i.e. to test in this way is the candidate’s ability to represent and sell an organisation, (and in the process themselves). To test their ability to inspire an audience with confidence. To test an ability to persuade and to demonstrate the ability to marshal thoughts and structure something that sounds really impressive. Showcasing. Convincing. Persuading. Getting the message across. So sitting, as some candidates I have listened to do, in front of a flip chart with some very small handwriting, wiggling across a single piece paper does not really do a deal to impress. Mumbling in a down beat fashion or shuffling pages of A4 on the desk really does not cut it. I also wonder if few people attend any training on presentations or public speaking. Speaking to an audience is one of the most common phobias there is. Why would you volunteer to go on a course to do something that literally frightens you? Suffers feel that all eyes are upon them the spotlight effect their acute self-awareness makes it very difficult for them to focus on what is going on around them, to remember their speech, or to read from notes. Their mind goes blank or foggy. Their distress is further fuelled by their efforts to hide or mask their discomfort which may become apparent through blushing, facial immobility, sweating, shaking, twitching, or an inability to speak normally or coherently. And in an interview situation where getting the job depends on success it is all much worse. So what should the candidates have do when faced with the task…. ‘you have ten minutes to give us a presentation on…’? An understanding of the audience, what they already know, what language they speak and what they want to hear about. I guess the man from the World Bank had never met a social housing tenant, I think he was an academic. His presentation, although very important, did not set the room alight. Effective presenters know who their audience are and how the message needs to be delivered. Effective presenters stand and command the room. Presenting is a display activity. Standing indicates confidence and control. It enables a small amount of movement, a little pacing, wider hand gestures; a greater ability to get up close to the audience. Standing enables you to inject more energy into your presentation. If you think of some of the great orators that you have heard, they did not sit behind a desk and mutter. Clear diction and adequate volume. One of the great bonuses of standing is the way that it will enable you to breath deeply and speak on the  out-breath. This will give your voice depth and volume. (But if you have a microphone you need to be careful not to over project.) Measured delivery, presenters need to relax, speak slowly and use all the techniques of pace and rhythm to ensure that there is clarity and emphasis. Presenters need to recognise the ability of the audience to absorb and give them appropriate time to do so. Good visual aids, if you have to make your presentation ‘on the day’, and are given flip chart, tuck a ruler and pencil in your pocket. Make your visual aids, helpful, clean and neat. Use them for the emphasis, they should give not for the narrative. If you are given a topic in advance and are using powerpoint, use it sensibly, again it is not the narrative it is the emphasis. Structure, a presentation needs a clear beginning, middle and end. It needs an overview and a conclusion. And keep to time, nothing annoys a panel more and tells them that you have not planned and rehearsed. Message, if a presentation is testing oral persuasiveness then there needs to be a very clear message or argument with facts and evidence to support it. Ask yourself, what is the the thing that I want my audience to walk away remembering? you also need great content. You need content tailored to the audience and answering the questions they want answering. Speak with conviction, if you don’t believe your message who else will? A smile, a sign that you are pleased to be there. Sometimes a touch of humour can help you build rapport with the audience, but how much you can use this will depend on the situation. But your smile needs to be on the mouth and in your eyes and your eyes need to meet theirs. Yes, I have sat through many hours of very poor presentations and many other hours of very good ones. It’s procedural. It’s mundane. I was now a few steps from the ring of intimately conferring women whose relative seniority was perfectly represented by the varying expense of their haircuts. They seemed like a good crowd to start with but I was planning to work my way through everyone in the room by the end of the evening. ‘We still need to get talent attached. We’ve heard a few exciting rumours but nothing has been confirmed yet,’ Short and Sharp was explaining to Basic Ponytail. ‘It’s hugely important to get the talent right,’ Salon Blowdry observed. ‘Absolutely. A social media campaign can depend upon it.’ ‘And sometimes, no matter how much you plan, you can always end up signing the celebrity who goes and says something racist, or has a punchup, or dies that week,’ Basic Ponytail chipped in. The women tutted in unison as though this were a problem they were only too accustomed to. They must have noticed me by now. Their backs were still knitted together. I cleared my throat. No response. I craned my neck to try to  break through their wall, but no. They were now occupied on their phones undoubtedly checking the latest updates of their social media campaigns. ‘Double Double, Toil and Trouble’ What am I doing? ‘Fire Burn and Caldron Bubble.’ At least theyre looking at me now. ‘Fillet of a fenny snake’  Fewer hand movements. ‘Dah-da-dah-da boil and bake!’ Ok, good. End. ‘Macbeth,’ Salon Style diagnosed. ‘That’s right. Well, you remind me of the three witches.’ ‘How flattering. What does that make you?’ ‘A traitorous King, I suppose.’ ‘I see. Penny Foil, pleased to meet you.’ ‘Florence Forge.’ I stuck out my hand, but no, that didn’t seem right. Penny hadn’t tried to shake my hand.  Are handshakes suddenly gauche? Are we supposed to kiss? Yes, that’s sophisticated and adult. God, I’m really doing this. Both cheeks! Penny pulled away from my far too close face and shook her hair, disgruntled that I may have unsettled it. It dawned on me that I would now have to undergo a similar exchange with the other two ladies present. ‘Florence Forge, nice to meet you’ Kiss kiss. ‘Alice’ ‘Florence Forge, nice to meet you.’ Kiss kiss. ‘Sandra, you too.’ ‘And what do you do, Florence?’ Penny enquired as she took a sip of Sham-pagne. ‘I’m actually a freelance community manager. I launch social campaigns for various brands  and certain high-flying individuals.’ ‘Like what?’ ‘I’ve just done a twitter campaign on the nation’s favourite paint stripper which is a product, not a person.’ ‘Right.’ Don’t look at me like that. It was an incredible campaign. ‘What about you, Penny?’ ‘I work for a company called WonLine.’ ‘Oh, cool.’ ‘Have you heard of us?’ ‘Yeah, I think so. It rings a bell. A really loud bell.’ ‘Well that’s surprising because we’re very small indeed.’ ‘Oh, really?’ ‘Very small. You’re within the inner circle, in fact.’  Alice  smiled smugly at me and Sandra shrugged her shoulders like some sort of admission of guilt. They  were Penny Foil’s dedicated employees. ‘We’re a startup,’ Alice elucidated. ‘And getting more and more well-known every day.’ ‘Fantastic.’ ‘2000 hits on the website a week, five potential investors and a three percent increase in market spending.’ ‘Impressive.’ How else to respond? ‘Excuse me, girls, I’ve just seen a very important man who needs to buy me lunch,’ Penny announced and skipped off. Sandra smiled apologetically at me and handed over a card. ‘She likes you.’ ‘She does? She wouldn’t have introduced herself otherwise. That’s her signal,’ Sandra winked. ‘Sandra, Alice barked,  we have to attend to Penny at all times.’ ‘Give us a call, Florence. This could be the start of something,’ Sandra encouraged before being whisked away by the militant Alice. She had liked me. She had liked me? The three witches remained on my periphery for the rest of the event. They mainly kept to themselves, leaping on people every now and then who they tried to squeeze money out of. Penny may have liked me but I wasnt sure I liked her. I ended up tossing the card in the bin with my name tag. Penny was imperious, arrogant and mean. I had a lot to learn about the industry but my lessons were not going to come from an Anti-Social networker who didnt know the first thing about how to make real connections.   Liked this? Even when student loans come in, I’m £1000+ into my overdraft, and I know I’m not the only one. Students struggling to make it through several years of expensive city living may feel like they’re drowning in debt before the loan repayments have even kicked in. To help with that, here are five ways you can help yourself to survive life deep in overdraft. Save wherever possible Saving money at university is not easy, and getting really good at it is a long process. If you’re already far into your overdraft, chances are you haven’t been utilising this tip, even though it’s well-treaded territory on Debut, to the greatest extent â€" and that’s okay! Spending money on yourself every once in a while is necessary to stay sane. However, you can still enjoy your student life frugally. You could bulk-buy your pasta at the start of term, or visit Aldi for deals on cheap beer that’s still high percentage and doesn’t taste awful, or start buying local microbreweries’ beers when out at the pub instead of the more expensive pints. Saving a little here and there will start to add up, and your bank account will show it. Work for your degree University is a lot of work all on its own. Therefore it can be difficult to force yourself to do anything work-related that isn’t course essential. If you’re really backed into a corner with your overdraft, you need to start thinking about income before graduation. A flexible-hours contract (or in some cases as zero hours) will generally allow you to choose hours around your studies. I recommend working some weekends and making a little cash to pay for the fun things whenever your workload will allow it. Apply for funding This tip may not apply to all students, as not everyone has a lot of options for extra funding. However, a lot of areas give grants to students going to university just based on where they used to live. Charities and groups through your university may also be able to assist if you email them and explain the situation. It’s especially worth doing if you come from a background that makes it more difficult to afford university. Many grants are designed to help disadvantaged and minority students make it through their degrees. Students have funded Oxford degrees using grants and funding that can’t be found on the student finance website. Look into this, and you may be pleasantly surprised. Stand up for your tenant’s rights Tenancy can be a ridiculous affair, and deposits can be taken and held indefinitely. This is a common problem for many students who are no doubt chasing deposits months after a contract has ended. It may be surprising to students who’ve had run-ins with finicky landlords, but they generally don’t really know what they’re talking about â€" and when they do, they sometimes lie to students anyway to try to squeeze every penny from their already diminished bank accounts. There are some great resources on hand though to help you identify whether you’re being conned. Shelter are a great organisation that helps you easily check your own and your landlord’s legal rights. It’s easy to win arguments over blu-tack on walls when you have a handy legal web-page to link, and Shelter is a great resource for this. ACORN, a tenants’ union that you’ve probably heard about from your most left-wing friends, is a similarly great support network and resource. Its also worth popping down to your union and seeing what resources they have available. Go to these places for help, and you’ll likely get back a bigger proportion of your deposit than you ever anticipated. Don’t lose hope It can feel awful when there are seemingly no places left to turn for financial support and you can’t afford the basic things. Recently, I hit the point at which I had less than £6 left in my overdraft. Knowing I couldn’t afford a single week’s food was terrifying. If you’re in a similar position, it’s important to remember that there is always somewhere else to turn. Hopefully this article has left you with a better idea of what to do when you’re in a difficult position, and the tools you need to scrimp and save your way to graduation.
